Evaluation Day.....

Ok, as I said in the previous post, Nick has been undergoing some evaluations last week and today was the last eval. before the parent conference. They are evaluating him to see where his functioning is and that will determine if he can continue to get services at UW. After seeing so much progress in him this year, I was crushed when he did not "perform" at his best. Simple tasks like matching spoons, identifying car, and imitating just did not happen without my intervention. Nick was bouncing all over the place and could not focus on anything for more than 5 seconds. He does so much better at home, which kind of gives a false sense of progress. It may as well have been his very first evaluation-if you grade it by that then he has not made any significant progress in nearly 3 years. But, I KNOW he has...it is all so frustrating! After an hour of watching him throw blocks, repeat non-sense words, and play with his hands, it was all over and I was heartbroken. We will see what the report says, but I suspect his functioning is still around the toddler level. Days like this are very hard.

I am so sorry. I know how discouraging it can be. Steven does the same thing at his evals. Whe he started the school program, they were expecting him to further on the spectrum then he was because he just couldn't focus at the evals. He was recently re-evaluated at school by his teachers and the difference was unbelievable.

Is it possible to get a new eval based on that progress?

I am so sorry that the evaluation did not depict all Nick can do! That is so frustrating?! I wish they could do an evaluation in your home or at least take into consideration what you know of Nick!

We all have good days and bad days and times where we perform better than some others.
You know one evaluation day or session is not necessarily representative of the progress of a child over a period of time. An on-going observation would have certainly given a more accurate view of where Nick is at.

You're his Mum and you know him better than anybody! You know he has progressed and that's all that matter. Every little step in the right direction is a winning step.

Love to all of you.

I know you all understand. It is so frustrating. Especially when I find that he has been singing songs from the radio at home and telling us things like "Time for diaper", "I'm gonna get you!", and follows directions! We find out on Friday what his results are. Thanks for the good cheer!! I really needed it!
